Highest 4th Wicket Partnership in Cricket History
Mahela Jayawardene and Thilan Samaraweera have broken a 51 year old record to create a new record for the Highest 4th Wicket Partnership ever in the history of cricket. On the second day of the 1st Test Match against Pakistan being played at the National Stadium in Karachi, the duo amassed 437 runs, 26 more than the previous record held by May and Colin Cowdrey for England. The English batsmen had compiled 411 runs against West Indies in a test at Birmingham on 30th May 1957.
For Mahela Jayawardene, long partnerships are nothing new. The Sri Lanka captain alongwith Kumar Sangakkara hold the world record for the highest partnership for any wicket in the world. The two had amassed 624 runs for the 3rd wicket against South Africa. The venue was Colombo and the date was 27th July 2006. Even the next best record - the second highest partnership record for any wicket is on Sri Lanka’s name. That was the 576 runs scored by Sanath Jayasurya and Rosha Mahanama for the second wicket against India in 1997. The venue was again Colombo.
